Sociabble Turns 10: Celebrating a Full Decade of Innovation in Internal Comms

As Sociabble marks its 10th anniversary, we delve into how Sociabble has been at the vanguard of this transformation.

As Sociabble marks its 10th anniversary, we delve deeper into the evolution of internal communications, illustrating how Sociabble has been at the vanguard of this transformation, keeping employees informed and engaged through changing times and new technologies.

2014: A Transformational Year for Internal Communications

Sociabble was born into a changing world—quite literally. In 2014, internal communications within organizations was truly at a transitional phase, bridging traditional methods with new emerging digital tools. The landscape was characterized by a mix of older, established communication channels and the initial adoption of newer technologies that would later become central to workplace communication.

Needless to say, communications departments were often left confused, with more than a few managers scratching their heads. Email and intranets were still used heavily, alongside some early collaboration tools, and even printed newsletters and physical bulletin boards were commonplace. Social media as a tool of business was still a relatively new concept, with comms and sales departments still not entirely sure how to incorporate it.

In addition, there were simple tech barriers holding comms back. In 2014, the technology available for internal communications was evolving, but several obstacles still hindered its effectiveness. Bandwidth and hardware limitations affected the quality and frequency of video conferencing. The mobile workforce was growing, but mobile communication tools were not as advanced or integrated into work processes as they would later become. Moreover, the concept of work-from-anywhere was still emerging, with many organizations yet to embrace remote or hybrid work models fully.

Overall, 2014 can be seen as a pivotal year when the seeds of modern digital workplace communication were being planted, with a mix of traditional and digital tools coexisting before the digital transformation wave fully took hold. But all of that was soon to change.

The Arrival of New Technologies in the Comms Landscape

Since 2014, the landscape of internal communications within organizations has undergone significant evolution, driven by technological advancements, shifting workplace norms, and changing employee expectations. Not just new software or hardware, but entire paradigm shifts in how information is shared, and how communication is viewed. Some of these important developments include:

Digital Transformation

Since 2014, there has been a significant shift towards digital platforms like Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom for real-time communication. Plus, an increased emphasis on mobile-friendly communication tools to ensure employees can access information and communicate from anywhere, enhancing flexibility and responsiveness. Together, these new technologies have become central to daily operations, especially for remote and hybrid work environments.

Integration of Social Media Elements

Organizations have started to incorporate social media elements into their intranets, such as likes, comments, and shares, to increase engagement and foster a sense of community. Employee Advocacy programs have been added as well, leveraging employees as brand ambassadors on social media, blending internal and external communication strategies for broader engagement.

Focus on Employee Engagement and Experience

Creating interactive and engaging content has become paramount, with the use of interactive newsletters, videos, and live Q&A sessions used to make internal communications more engaging and personal. Feedback mechanisms like regular surveys, suggestion boxes, and forums within internal communication platforms have been utilized to gather employee feedback and make them feel heard and valued.

Data-Driven Communication

The utilization of analytics tools to measure engagement, reach, and effectiveness of communication strategies, has increasingly allowed for data-driven decisions and personalized communication efforts. Segmentation and personalization have moved to the forefront, thanks to tailored communication based on roles, departments, and locations to ensure relevance and effectiveness, moving away from one-size-fits-all messages.

Integration of AI and Automation

Automated workflows have become possible thanks to the use of AI and automation; AI has been used to streamline communication processes, such as scheduling updates, distributing newsletters, and managing content on internal platforms. AI has also been leveraged for creating personalized communication experiences and for analysing communication patterns to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

Sociabble Incorporated These Technologies into a Revolutionary Platform

Where some saw the arrival of these technologies and practices as a cause for concern, at Sociabble, we saw them as an incredible opportunity. Since our inception, we’ve chosen to incorporate these game changing advancements into a cutting-edge system for employee communication. From the get-go, we set out to revolutionize internal communications with a platform that was both engaging and accessible to every employee, whether at the office or on the frontlines.

We recognized the challenges that companies were facing; we saw how many organizations struggled with disjointed communication tools that failed to engage or even reach all employees, particularly frontline workers who often lacked access to corporate communication channels. Many still relied on email-centric communication, and we wanted to guide them toward a more dynamic, multi-channel platform, as part of a broader trend towards creating a more engaging, interactive, and inclusive internal communication ecosystem.
