Table of Contents Reasons to work remotely Why is teleworking so difficult? What should companies do to succeed? Conclusion There are many reasons to work remotely. For some, it’s simply a matter of routine. For others, it could be the result of a vacation or getting work done on a business trip. And occasionally, unfortunately, it can come about as the product of a serious health crisis. Regardless of the situation, there are best practices to follow and pitfalls to be avoided to make the experience effective. In this white paper, we discuss the techniques we’ve put into play at Sociabble, based on years of experience with working remotely. Remote work is good for everyone. But why is teleworking difficult? Telework can be an effective solution, but it’s difficult to implement, both for employees and for companies alike, if the procedures and guidance aren’t there. Here are techniques for helping employees work from home during challenging times. Tip #1 Establish a formal workspace. Suggest to each employee that they set up a dedicated workspace at home. As we have seen, it is essential to maintain a professional/personal boundary. At Sociabble, just before the telecommuting of all employees, we allowed them to take home their second screens. Chairs are often more complicated, although it can make sense as well. Tip #2 Use video as much as possible. Require video for all synchronous communications. The difference between video and audio communication is huge. In video, you can more easily perceive the emotions of the other, the multitude of weak signals that allow you to adjust your message as you do in real life. But imposing video also means giving each employee a reason to wash, to dress, to be presentable. An essential aid to not end up in pajamas all day. For employees who do not want their company to see their home-space, it is possible with most unified communication software to blur the background or set a virtual background. download_for_offline Download the eBook Want to learn more?
